POSSibilities Specialized Reading Course Overview

POSSibilities Specialized Reading: Mrs. Geckeler

2018-2019 Course Overview and Policies

Course Overview:

This year in Specialized Reading, students will develop reading skills in a small, highly individualized setting.  Students will work alone and in groups to strengthen reading and writing skills including prefixes, suffixes, sight words, comprehension, and sentence structure. Course content is drawn from National Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy and students' Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

In order to be successful in the course, students will need to be actively involved in class, participate in discussions, work cooperatively in groups, complete homework, and study for quizzes and tests.  Coursework will be modified according to students’ individual strengths and needs as outlined in their IEPs.

Grading Policy:

Students will earn grades each Marking Period based on a wide variety of work, including preparation, participation, quizzes, tests, and projects.  The unique strengths and needs of each student are kept in mind when grading. Grades are calculated using an online grading system, called Genesis, which families may view from home using the Parent Portal.  You can sign up for the Parent Portal through the Main Office at the high school. Students can earn an easy 100% for preparation by coming to class every day with their ID, planner, folder, and a pen or pencil.  Please provide your student with a folder and pen or pencil. Marking period grades are calculated using the following percentages: 25% for homework; 25% for quizzes/writing; 25% for tests/projects; 25% for classwork, preparation, and participation.

Homework and Absence Policies:

Students are required to record all homework assignments in the planners they are given.  Late work is accepted for up to two weeks. Five points will be deducted per day late. Students who are absent should ask for the work they missed as soon as they return to school.  Work will be set aside. Extra help is available.
