HONORS SPANISH IV

Course Description

 

Honors Spanish IV further develops students' oral facility in the language.  The course concentrates on select readings from Spanish and Spanish-American literature, as well as current articles pertaining to cultural topics.  Students will read works from various literary genres; novels, plays, short stories, poetry, etc.  The emphasis will be on conversation, reading and writing.  Selected advanced topics dealing with the culture of Hispanic countries will be discussed.  Upon successful completion of this course, students may enroll in Advanced Placement Spanish with departmental approval.

 

Course Proficiencies

 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

 

  1. Understand formal and colloquial speech spoken at a native speaker's pace and with a native's pronunciation.
  2. Converse actively in the target language with the teacher and students, exhibiting appropriate pronunciation, intonation, and inflection.
  3. Comprehend and discuss the content and significance of selected works of Spanish literature, dialogues, essays, and other select reading passages.
  4. Organize and write guided and creative compositions, summaries, and other types of expository prose in Spanish.
  5. Demonstrate comprehension and mastery of selected cultural topics dealing with people, places, and events in the Spanish-speaking world.
  6. Develop increased awareness of the richness of the culture of Spain and Latin America and of the global contributions of Hispanics.
  7. Demonstrate comprehension and mastery of advanced grammar topics, new vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions. 

Course Requirements 

Students will be expected to:

 Attend class regularly and be on time. 

  1. Bring necessary supplies to class.
  2. Complete all in class and homework assignments.
  3. Make-up all work after any absence within a deadline established by school policy.
  4. Maintain a high degree of class participation and preparation.
  5. Demonstrate a cooperative attitude and contribute to the learning process of the class.

 

Evaluation Procedures

 Marking period grades will be assigned quarterly and will be determined by the following:

  1. Class Participation/Class Work........................................ 20%
  2. Homework (Minimum 3/week;1/week graded)................ 20%
  3. *Tests/Quizzes/Presentations........................................... 45%
  4. Oral Proficiency.............................................................. 15%
  • Tests = 2 quiz grades
  • Projects = 1 or 2 quiz grades depending on the nature of the project
