AP ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

 

Course Description

 

This course consists of an intensive review of all grammatical structures, considerable vocabulary building and speaking exercises to improve pronunciation and language facility.  In addition to the texts, materials are chosen from Italian classical and contemporary literature, magazines, newspapers, and audiovisual materials.  There is practice in expository writing and students are expected to participate actively in class discussions.  Concentrated practice to develop the skills required for the Advanced Placement exam will be an integral part of the course.

 

Course Proficiencies

 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

 

  1. Understand formal and informal spoken Italian, regardless of the speaker's pace and/or pronunciation.
  2. Converse actively in the target language with the teacher, other students and native speakers using appropriate pronunciation, language structure and vocabulary.
  3. Accurately read selected short stories and related passages and discuss their content and significance in the target language.
  4. Organize and compose expository passages on demand.
  5. Demonstrate mastery of advanced grammar topics.
  6. Understand and actively use a broad vocabulary that includes idiomatic expressions.
  7. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of selected topics and themes relating to the culture of Italians and Italian-Americans.

 

Course Requirements

 

Students will be expected to:

 

  1. Attend class regularly and be on time. 
  2. Bring necessary supplies to class.
  3. Complete all in class and homework assignments.
  4. Make-up all work after any absence within a deadline established by school policy.
  5. Maintain a high degree of class participation and preparation.
  6. Demonstrate a cooperative attitude and contribute to the learning process of the class.
  7. Pass the mid-year and final examinations.
  8. Receive passing grades on all compositions and other writing assignments which will be organized and written without a dictionary.
  9. Maintain a notebook or binder with sections for vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, literature and reading, and grammar.

 

Evaluation Procedures

 

Marking period grades will be assigned quarterly and will be determined by the following:

 

  1. Tests/Quizzes/Listening and Reading Assessments ………………..        35%
