COURSE DESCRIPTION

AP Physics 1 is the first of a two­ year sequence that is designed to prepare students to take the AP Physics 1 examination. This course is organized around six big ideas combining together the fundamental science principles and theories of a general physics college course. It begins by integrating the use of trigonometric functions into Algebra-Based Physics topics of mechanics, waves, sound waves and electricity. This allows students to solve problems with vectors that are oriented at arbitrary angles; rather than just parallel or perpendicular to one another.

 

This course emphasizes problem solving in the context of the principles of physical laws and principles; as well as the ability to apply that knowledge and skill to phenomena in either an experimental or theoretical setting. Great attention is given to strengthening and reinforcing the natural connections between the sciences and real world.

 

Students are required to take the AP Physics 1 exam. The exam is Tuesday May 2nd at noon.

You will need the following supplies in order to have a successful school year:

  • 2 – inch Binder: All students will need a binder containing all handouts
  • 1-subject spiral notebook: For note taking
  • Lined paper: For problem solving
  • Pen and Pencil: These will not be supplied for you
  • Scientific or Graphing Calculator

 

COURSE ASSESSMENT

 

Your grade for each marking period will be based on the following:

 

            Tests                            60%

            Quizzes                       10%

            Labs & Activities        20%

            Homework and Homework Quizzes  10%

 

Each marking period will comprise 22% of your overall grade. The final exam accounts for the remaining 12% of the grade for this course. Additionally, please be aware of the school’s policy on honors course weighting in your student handbook.

 


 

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

  • Be on time and prepared to work –
    • Be prepared each day bringing all of the necessary supplies (pen, pencil, notebook, homework, assignments etc.) and a willingness to learn. 
    • Class will start on time; tardiness is unacceptable and will take away from your learning as well as your class grade.  Students will be subject to a disciplinary referral for 4 lates to class as per student handbook.
  • Be attentive and respectful –
    • Of the teacher, the material being taught, fellow students, the classroom environment, and especially yourself. 
  • Be responsible –
    • Ask permission to leave the room in emergency situations only – take care of personal business before/after class
    • Complete all assignments on time and take responsibility for your own learning
    • Display appropriate conduct both in the classroom and the hallways
    • Maintain academic integrity by handing in your own work and refraining from cheating on exams and quizzes. 
  • Be a problem solver, not a problem –
    • Think critically each day; avoid conflict by working cooperatively with your peers and the teacher.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY

We will be learning new material each day so students are expected to come to class every day.

You are responsible for promptly making up missed assignments after returning to school.

  • If you are absent the day before an assessment, be prepared to take it the day it is given. 
  • If you are absent from school the day of an assessment, you will be required to take the assessment the day you return.  Plan ahead to take the exam.
  • You are responsible for scheduling a make-up time for any laboratory activities missed during your absence.

 

 

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Knowledge is too precious to steal.  Make sure everything that you turn in to me is your own work even if it is a “group” assignment.  Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive no credit (This means a ZERO) for that assignment and will not be allowed to make up the credit for that assignment. Additionally, please be aware of the school’s policy on cheating and plagiarism in your student handbook.
